The Innovation Center’s Artificial Intelligence leadership team recently won first place in the 2022 World Artificial Intelligence Competition for Youth’s fifth annual competition.
The global event for students in elementary through high school seeks to “inspire students worldwide to learn and use AI to solve real-world problems.” The Innovation Center’s team competed with students from across the world.
For the competition, the Innovation Center students presented their approach to the conservation challenge of restoring an endangered fish species. Their solution, called FishNET AI, involves capturing underwater footage of fish habitats and analyzing it through an AI model to identify the different fish present. The data is shared with Boulder County Parks and Open Space and Colorado Fish and Wildlife.
The team, started more than three years ago, is comprised of five St. Vrain Valley high school students mentored by Mai Vu, Altona Middle School’s computer science teacher.
