NEW YORK, Nov. 15, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) innovations in Open RAN Massive MIMO (mMIMO) solutions will play a pivotal role in improving performance to match that of traditional RAN mMIMO, according to global technology intelligence firm ABI Research. While traditional RAN vendors currently dominate the mMIMO market, momentum for Open RAN is building as the technology matures, with pioneering deployments from operators like Rakuten and DISH.
"Advanced AI and ML techniques are poised to help close the performance gap by enhancing key capabilities such as beamforming and channel estimation," states 5G, 6G and Open RAN Research Analyst Larbi Belkhit. "Integration of these models, likely in the Distributed Unit (DU), will be instrumental for Open RAN vendors to maximize spectrum efficiency."
Companies such as DeepSig are already demonstrating that AI-powered software can improve Open RAN mMIMO efficiency. Its OmniPHY solution leverages ML for improved channel estimation, beam optimization, and interference mitigation in 5G networks. As AI/ML matures, such solutions applied to Open RAN mMIMO will boost performance and energy consumption closer to traditional RAN levels.
"The integration of AI and ML techniques, along with other innovations in energy efficiency and GPU acceleration, will accelerate performance improvements closer to traditional RAN networks. This will remove critical barriers to Open RAN adoption and pave the way for flexible, interoperable 5G deployments for network operators rather than reliance on radio network equipment from traditional vendors currently dominating the market, such as Ericsson, Huawei, and Nokia," Belkhit concludes.
These findings are from ABI Research's 5G Massive MIMO Market Developments technology analysis report. This report is part of the company's 5G, 6G, and Open RAN research service, which includes research, data, and ABI Insights. Based on extensive primary interviews, Technology Analysis reports present in-depth analysis on key market trends and factors for a specific technology.

Microsoft on Wednesday debuted its first custom AI chip and cloud CPU during its Ignite conference.
Most companies developing AI models, particularly generative AI models like ChatGPT, GPT-4 Turbo and Stable Diffusion, rely heavily on GPUs. GPUs' ability to perform many computations in parallel make them well-suited to training — and running — today’s most capable AI. But there simply aren't enough GPUs to go around. Nvidia’s best-performing AI cards are reportedly sold out until 2024. The CEO of chipmaker TSMC was less optimistic recently, suggesting that the shortage of AI GPUs from Nvidia

Smartphone sales in China rose 11 per cent in the first four weeks of October compared with last year, in the latest sign that the market is recovering from an eight-month slump, as top domestic brands recorded significant growth to beat rival Apple. According to a new report published by Counterpoint Research, Xiaomi, Honor and Huawei Technologies were the main forces behind that growth, with Huawei seeing sales rise 90 per cent year on year during the period. HONG KONG (Reuters) -Chinese technology giant Tencent Holdings on Wednesday said it has a large stockpile of AI chips from U.S. maker Nvidia, but that broadened U.S. restrictions on high-end chip sales to China will eventually impact its cloud services. President Martin Lau, on an analyst call following Tencent's third-quarter earnings report, said the U.S. decision last month to ban the export to China of more chips used in artificial intelligence (AI) will force the firm to use existing stock more efficiently and seek domestically produced alternatives. Tencent has enough Nvidia chips to continue development of its "Hunyuan" AI model "for at least a couple more generations", so the curbs will not affect near-term AI capability, Lau said.

Huawei Technologies is scrambling to crank up production of its new 5G smartphones to meet demand, according to analysts, as the wait time for its popular Mate 60 Pro model – the handset equipped with an advanced made-in-China chip that defies US sanctions – has been extended up to three months. "Production capacity can't meet demand, which is the reason Huawei is doing pre-orders," said Counterpoint Research senior analyst Wang Yang, adding that presales help buy some time for Huawei to secure
